How to Design and Build a Bulb Lasagne

Did you know that with the perfect pot or planter you can maximize your blooms in those gloomy winter and early-spring months by planting a variety of spring bulbs that bloom throughout the season! By selecting the right combination of bulbs, you can have continuous blooms for 2 months or more depending on your climate. You’ll select your bulbs in early fall and plant them in late fall.
Will bulbs survive your winter temperatures?
It's important to first check your Hardiness Zone before buying bulbs. Only choose bulbs that will survive/thrive in your hardiness zone (winter weather temperatures where you live).
US GROWERS: Visit this website and enter your Zip Code to find your zone planthardiness.ars.usda.gov
NON-US GROWERS: Ask your local plant nursery or visit your local government's website to determine what bulbs will grow in your area and when to plant them.
Our bulb lasagne recipes were designed for US zones 3-8 with winter temperatures between -35F/-37.2C and 15F/9.4C.
IS YOUR WINTER WARMER?
If your zone is warmer than 8, some bulbs will need to be purchased “pre-chilled” or placed in a dedicated fridge for 8 weeks. Start early to get your bulbs chilled before planting.
IS YOUR WINTER COLDER?
If your zone is colder than 3, your pots may need extra protection from freezing temperatures.
If buying bulbs online, check the safe zones or temperatures the bulbs can handle (or need) for successful overwintering. If you’re buying from your local nursery, it’s likely those bulbs will survive your winter conditions.
